my graduation!

about 2.5 months overdue.... but nevertheless, yes, i graduated from Duke!

so glad that my family came to support me! =) and for my dad and my sis, this was also the first time they're here in the states... was definitely excited about them coming! yay!

Day 1: Baccalaureate service in the Chapel

my family and i standing in front of the almighty Duke Chapel after the baccalaureate service...

me and my parents!

and my dear sis! =)

from left: dominic, shiling, me, ying chiat... some photo taking before the bacc service started...

together with our parents and family... forming a big singaporean mass in the line!

Day 2: Commencement and Biology Reception (Certificate presentation)

at the Wallace Wade Stadium... the decor was pretty nice with little towers (resembling the chapel) erected to hold the flags of the various schools and departments...

class of 07 singaporeans @ duke!

more photo-taking, as we waited at the assembly area before the commencement started...

our big BS (bachelor of science) group, adorning the golden yellow hood... quite a number of kids actually decorated their caps to stand out in the crowd. good idea eh?

this was ADORABLE! little graduating blue devil (our Duke mascot) sitting on top of his cap! haha~!

after the commencement... notice that my tassle is flipped over to my right already? =P officially graduated!

at the bio reception:

Dr. Motten... one of my favourite professors ever! amazing how he worked magic to bring the complicated and often-boring taxonomy and organismal classifications to life! never forget the many field trips we had to the beach, the mangrove swamp (we saw baby alligators!) and the lake (kayaking!), the long but interesting lab sessions, and the hilarious lab practical and written exams that we had! thank you so much, dr. motten!

yay! received my diploma! the cert was pretty neat.. nicely placed within one of those thick folders with a drawing of the duke chapel on the other side too!

after the cert presentation...

our little trip to the famous and beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens. especially during the warmer months, it's always a favorite hangout place, for college kids to study, suntan, chill or play... also a popular picnic place for the Durham families to gather and hang out... though i din go to the gardens very often during the semesters i was here, but definitely one of the places i'm gonna miss...

in the flower terrace area, where rows and rows of flowers are planted along the steps of the terrace...

pretty flowers! and pretty me! hehe... =P

the MOST expensive dinner i've ever had....... booked a table at the fairview dining restaurant in washington duke inn and country club, our college's golf country club. because of this special occasion - commencement weekend - the set meal was especially pricey... ALMOST USD$100 per pax!!!! and no, i din strike lottery or anything.. but was using up my unfinished food points. instead of wasting them away, the points were definitely well-spent! =P (yes, i'm a small eater... and had almost 500 bucks left of my meal plan... too bad they forced a standard meal plan on us, or else i could have saved so much $$ these 3 years!!! in fact, i already chose the smallest possible plan every year! hmph.)

nevertheless, a champagne toast to graduation!! cheers! (and it was mothers' day too! happy mothers' day!)

yummy yummy desserts to wrap up a great meal..... =)

aren't these two little girls adorable? went to visit my other professor, Dr. P, at her house before flying off and leaving Duke... many thanks to Dr. P, for a wonderful bio 205L semester! you're simply one of the most caring, patient and helpful professors ever!

more pictures of my family's travels in the States next time! stay tuned!

caricature anyone?

finally, after looking at many artists doing the caricatures... in mexico, legoland in SD, NYC etcetc... we finally decided to take a good look in taiwan, and settled on one lady @ fisherman's wharf, aka 渔人码头, where the lovers' bridge (情人桥)is... definitely worth the $$ we spent on it!

wrapping up undergraduate research...

it's amazing to see how all ur work over a long period of time gets summarized and squeezed in a sheet of paper 40 by 32 inches. the long days of hard work (although often producing failures rather than success) translated to pretty figures which actually work out to be a little neat story!

finally, after countless revisions, i got my poster printed! a great deal from the biology department, printing the poster for only 20 bucks (which my boss paid for anyway.. =P)!

presenting my very first research poster!

presentation #1: Many thanks to shudan (the grad student i was working with on left of pic), kathleen (2nd from right), deirdre (right) and many other friends who came down to support!

Presentation #2: Graduation with distinction (or rather honors) poster session. Me trying hard to explain the technically complicated figures of immunology to a listener...

Many many thanks to my boss, Weiguo, for having me in the lab for the 2 years!! really appreciate all the guidance and encouragement (not forgetting the not-so-occasional teasing... =P)!

More than a month later... darling had his poster session too! showcasing his hard work with the green worms over the past year at the seniors honors thesis poster session.
fm and Katlin, the grad student he was working with. glowing greeen wormies!
sangyu: all enthusiastic about explaining her research. =P
congratulations to everyone for a job well done!

Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature

i found this on digg, and started reading with new comprehension of how psychology and evolutionary biology really shines light on some new understandings of human nature... but as i read on, the bullshit became greater, until i spotted obvious mistakes and blatant and ignorant uses of evolution and natural selection.

see what u think of this...

Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature
Why most suicide bombers are Muslim, beautiful people have more daughters, humans are naturally polygamous, sexual harassment isn't sexist, and blonds are more attractive.

Sixth College's commencement (for fm and xinyi):

Managed to catch xinyi amongst the crowd... =)

couldn't find fm initially... but thanks to his mum's sharp eyes, we finally saw him in the block of people that was furthest away from us... used so much zoom trying to snap good pictures of fm that i exhausted the camera batteries at the end of the commencement! here's darling in the midst of everyone...

trying to not look too bored by all the looonng speeches... =P

finally, the single important moment in the whole commencement! congrats to you dear!

after the commencement, outside the arena, where the fresh graduates were swamped with balloons, garlands, flowers.....

darling with his tassle moved to the left. officially graduated!

beautiful picture, with Geisel in the background...

Visiting Katlin and her husband, Mario, at their house in the evening... before leaving on our flight to SF the next morning... we'll miss you, katlin!

More pictures (our post-graduation trip, my Duke graduation, etcetc. ) will be up soon... stay tuned!
