heavy food for tot...
frankly, i now tremble with fright over the stuff i have been reading for the last hour...
and no, im really serious here...
i was talking to a friend on the Sg Blogosphere vs CZ issue. and a link i searched for him started me reading... and the more i read, the chillier it got. could it be the cold weather outside? prob. but other stuff made my heart even colder...
i here list the sites i have been reading, in no particular order:
it also hit upon me another blog post i read recently, by a chinese writer, who commented oin the useless egg-throwing at jap embassies in china. he/she called upon his/her fellow chinese in america to be actively involve in social and political circles and make a true difference, just as the jews did. i was also surprised (or shld i be?) that i do personally know quite a few of the bloggers whose opinions mattered in the discussion. putting two and two together. could this be a thought revolution? the newer generation, using a new medium, expressing their frustrations at problems they've witnessed since young and couldnt do anything about? maybe. but this kind of blogosphere reaction should really be closely watched. for watever reasons.
im reading as im typing this post. i guess i really shldnt continue further. after all, my future's at stake, right?

i here list the sites i have been reading, in no particular order:
- an unofficial news archive of an incident in 1998 where then-Chairman of EDB and current chairman of A*STAR Mr Phillip Yeo called for resignations from several of our Members of Parliament because they "support bond breakers". (this is a very very ugly incident) link
- a public apology to Mr Phillip Yeo for comments made on a person's blog. link
- yet another public apology to Mr Yeo from a very active blogger and ex-PSC scholar, AcidFlask, who was featured in the news recently for comments against scholarship orgnaisations. link (note: there's unconfirmed news that his blog in under a formal law suit. no joke)
- "A Sad Day for the Singapore Blogosphere", a listing of commentaries on related issues link

oh god, pls make the class fail....
its been a bad day...
no mood to study structural biochem last night. didnt manage to wake up this morning to finish up.
it rained and rained and rained on this important day. i didnt have an umbrella. half way to the lecture hall, i realise i didnt have my wallet (and thus, ID). that was 15mins to the exam.
walked back. my hoodie was soaked by the time i got through the rain. jeans too. thank god for waterproof bags and boots.
gg up the hill, felt like its some mini army exercise. walking thru rain and mud, uphill, half soaked, thinking: i will reach the end.
taking exam with wet jeans is not fun. but taking exams without confidence is worse. oh well. although i didnt know why B-DNA bends (do they even bend??) (10marks), or what this structure or what that motif is called, i think i should be failing the class. i hope. (crosses finger)
and anyway, im hoping the class will fail. pls. pls. make them all fail. -eviltots- =p
at least its all over now...

Props to Student Action!
Brief Summary of Events:
Administrators wanted to name Sixth as Richard Atkinson College without soliciting student input. Money appears to be a big part behind that decision.
The only student representative on the Naming Board was (deliberately?) misinformed about the voting time so the student did not participate in the voting.
Much student protest was first heard in the Sixth College Forums (and the second thread) and in the campus newspaper Guardian.
The administrators finally stepped down. =)
Students must have a voice in the shaping of this community they are in. This only goes to show that, for the time being, we still do have that power to make changes.
Thinking back about Singapore and theCasino Integrated Resorts incident... sighz...

CAMPUS NOTICE
University of California, San Diego
OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR
April 27, 2005
ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD Healthcare) ALL STUDENTS AT UCSD
SUBJECT: The Naming of Sixth College
Over the last several months, Sixth College and the campus have been considering potential names for the college. Richard C. Atkinson, UCSD's former Chancellor, University of California's former President and one of higher education's most visionary leaders, emerged as the most compelling choice.
Dr. Atkinson was the clear consensus leader for obvious reasons: His commitment to education embodies Sixth College's educational goals and theme of the integration of Culture, Art and Technology; his early research in the field of memory placed him in the vanguard of the digital revolution; his national leadership in the educational uses of information technology enhanced the promise of innovative teaching; and his contributions to the arts on our campus resulted in strong support for the Stuart Collection and our three world-class departments of Music, Theatre and Dance, and the Visual Arts.
I am deeply disappointed, therefore, to inform you that Dr. Atkinson has withdrawn his name from further consideration. Even if he does not reconsider his decision, and I sincerely hope that he will, I am determined to find an appropriate venue on our campus to honor his distinguished career. Yet, whatever venue we identify, it will not begin to approximate or commemorate his true and enduring impact on this campus.
The campus community is extremely proud of Dr. Atkinson, his accomplishments and his unwavering commitment to the young people of this country who seek a better life through higher education. He fought hard and broke new ground as Chancellor. He was tireless in promoting diversity within our campus staff, faculty and students. He supported the establishment of the Cross Cultural Center at UCSD while working to avoid the pitfalls that had befallen similar centers at other campuses.
As UC President, he was a strong supporter of extending domestic-partner benefits for same-sex couples; he pressed aggressively in support of outreach programs to expand the number of students from underserved communities who could qualify for UC; and he challenged both the use and the unfair design of the SAT as a tool in admissions, thus fighting to make the admissions process more fair.
There is much to be disappointed about with his decision to withdraw.
Therefore, I felt it was important to let you know of this new development. As you can imagine, this nomination meant a great deal to me. I am heartened, however, that Dr. Atkinson remains steadfast in his support for UCSD, and I am truly grateful for his continued commitment.

notes on some tots (to organise later), study for biochem first. =(
cat, montaigne's essays on death last quarter
recent movies on medical ethics and of provision of knowledge on impending death
would you wanna know if you dying? do u fear death? rather jump off building than to take chemotherapy? esp since chemo doesnt work? inital remission with subsequent growth. extension of life length but huge reduction of quality. burns.
tots from docs-to-be?

new words of the day...
astringent (n) A substance or preparation, such as alum, that draws together or constricts body tissues and is effective in stopping the flow of blood or other secretions.astringent does not equal facial wash. just because it says deep cleansing does not mean its a facial wash. wonder if ralph's has a return policy. =( darn. receipt not found. sighz...
panic (n) A sudden, overpowering terror, often affecting many people at once.or in my case, just me alone. because some smart alec didnt study for his midterms. i suck at multiple choice. brings back horror memories of my poor final grade in CAT 2A last quarter because i got a flat B in its MCQ midterms.

marble quotes...
a little knowledge can go a long way
action causes more trouble than thought
dying should be as easy as falling off a log
freedom is a luxury not a necessity
if you have many desires your life will be interesting
often you should act like you are sexless
when something terrible happens people wake up
- carved into the marble table im using now...
edit 4/22/05: all caps make hard reading. also, found out its polished granite, not marble.

Bloggers (esp scholars): beware what you say online...
recently there has been two incidents in singapore papers involving scholars and none of them are pleasant. first, the news report on bond-breakers, one of which showcased an ex-a* scholar. for more info read the original The New Paper article and see a*'s website for the agency's perspective.
and just yesterday (Apr 17's Sunday Times) a PSC scholar friend of mine got into trouble for making racist remarks in his password-protected blog site. apparently, "He used words like 'repulsive' to describe some races, and talked about their 'irksome features'." some bitch "actually compiled a dossier of the posts and e-mailed them to the PSC and the media."
Thus, a word of warning to all friends: be especially careful of what you say on the internet. u cant even hide behind passwords. or supposed anonymity. and apparently by signing that scholarship deed means that you are now the exemplary example of what an ideal human being is. so stop complaining and start behaving like lky or gch, do ur bsc+phd in 4 years and serve ur duty to the nation with a smile plastered to ur face. and quit spending time on blogs because everything u bitch about (and all ur emails and survey forms and everything u have ever touched after u signed that deed) will be recorded and used against you in the future shld u not comply with them anymore...
what are u waiting for then? get them a 4.0 GPA NOW!!!

on verbal lashings, TAs, strikes, casinos, 堕胎的猫咪 and high tech farmers...
verbal lashings
early for an econs lecture, for once... my econs class of probably 15 just received a verbal lashing from the chinese national TA who chided us for not contributing in class.
show of hands who are here to receive an education and improve on their skills? and who here thinks they are already very good and merely waits to receive their cert? often pple dont pay their sch fees and dont feel the need to maximise the economic benefit from what they have paid. i am paid to be here and no one has any questions to ask. everyone is dreaming. (paraphrased in my own words)well, reminds me of my time in secondary school where several teachers lashed the same things at us. never realise it could occur in uni too. and before any one jumps at me and seeks to tear my head, i am not suggesting that the TA was wrong to point out our inmaturity. or that we were right in not being active in class. it is just that the culture of universities are such that pple were never interested in the first place. and i shld add that in this case, the topic she was discussing was not even taught in lecture yet (which was in the hour immediately following the section). so, cant really blame us right?
TAs
regardless of her actions today, i was just reflecting the 2 weeks ago on how having TAs is not that bad, considering we were always encouraged to go to schs with small class sizes and have a professor act as both lecturer and TA. having a TA means that if ur prof sucks, at least u can get a better TA who can explain what-the-hell-is gg-on for u...
anyway, my structural biochem prof is a real sleep inducer, but thank god for the interesting TA who had been with him for the past 3 years and knew exactly what we need to study for. im still waiting for wanyue and kenny's high recommendations on him to come true.
strikes
bet u never heard of TAs striking. it apparently happened a year or two back when they demanded sth like either more pay or less TA work as they couldnt conc on their research. but what wasnt mentioned was that they knew exactly what was required of them when they applied to the uni.
on the other hand, all 8 Uni of Cals and 5 uni-run medical centres had a strike last thurs, which was why i raised the issue. the service workers, i.e. housekeepers, groundkeepers, delivery personnel, dining hall staff etc, demanded for more pay as their pay was the lowest of all workers in california (or sth likedat)... UC has been rejecting calls for pay raises as they say the budget is tight, yet they are giving bonuses to the top executives. what kind of biasedness are they encouraging here? exploiting the poor people. no wonder they say "the rich gets richer, the poor gets poorer" in the present economy...
casinos
well, for those of us who dont have super high pay like chancellors and presidents do, theres always the 2 new singaporean casinos u can go to. yeps, u heard right, not one, but two casinos in the tiny tropical island, one at marina and one in sentosa. i heard that if the money is good, they'll build one in orchard, woodlands, jurong and changi too. maybe we can also suggest to the gahmen that las vegas airport has jackpot machines in the transit areas. we can do the same! and since our polys' (or was it ITEs') "training our manpower for the future", we should start teaching gambling from young. then the uni grads all must take statistics classes. must prep for the future mah. there's no more jobs in the biomed sector. go join the gaming sector instead!
堕胎的猫咪
this is a reference to my CAT (ie Culture, Art and Technology aka Sixth College Writing Requirement) essay topic on abortion. just playing with words. i find that i need very perfect environments or my brain will refuse to work. sigh. hope i dont have any more writing courses...
high tech farmers
i think victor will be most familiar with this phrase, which goes all the way back to sec 3 days when we were setting up RI's greenhouse, continued with fooling around in Ngee Ann Poly's (relatively) huge rooftop greenhouse, and ended up on the tiny grass patch, 3rd floor behind LT3 in the old RJ campus at Mt Sinai and our hand-built greenhouse with 3 4-channel hydroponics systems.
this tot came back to me as i was replanting arabidopsis seedlings from agar plates to the soil pots i prepared earlier. perhaps there is a 乡下农夫 nature to me... and that could be the reason why i keep unconsciously going back to growing plants...
future
a fleeting tot came across my mind: as the rest of my future-colleagues all push towards culturing mouse or human cells and dissecting mice or zebrafish or wat have u, maybe i should just move in the opposite direction and go into plant work... think tot...

"slut! slut! arggghhhzzzzz! *sobz*sobz*"
i didnt say that. my CAT prof did.
and he didnt just do that, he acted it out, this scene from julia robert's mona lisa smile.
see! i told u he was insane.
猫咪堕胎很辛苦。 sighz... my essay writing skills need so much improvement. and im finding it harder to get into the mood, the inspiration, the magnetic link from god himself (Plato, Ion).
no mood to work anymore. my courseload is prob the lightest ive taken so far. and yet, still have to rush homework during lecture (like my ECON 1 problem set this morning).
weather's getting better! =) warmer. less of the strong cold winds i grew accustomed to. i love spring. =)

kid w/o a destiny...
kid w/o a destiny... this was the welcome message of my old nokia 5210. and those were the good days...
i know im a seriously flawed man. endowed with little scraps of heaven's gifts, struggling to survive in this fast-changing world... i refuse to believe that everyone has a destiny written for him or her. or perhaps everyone else's destiny has been written. but not mine.
destiny. without a destiny. im a kid w/o a destiny.
i was born with a blurry mind. i catch general concepts and rules fast, because this is all i see when i read and learn stuff. i suck at details. 细心 is exactly what i lack. god may be in the details, which i dont have. but who needs god anyway, so i tot.
carelessness. probably my biggest problem, among many. since i left singapore, leaving my 5210 and my life's motto behind, i seemed to face so many problems that ive never faced before. losing my first pair of oakley sunglasses within a week of purchase. missing flights, twice. almost missing more flights because i remembered the wrong details of carrier or time. losing handbag. ordering food only to find i have no cash nor card. what else did i miss out?
i lost my student id yesterday night. only discovered it this afternoon when i couldnt pay for brunch. it was a minor matter, requiring only a $15 replacement fee and a trip down to student business services to get a replacement. a minor inconvenience compared to all the trouble, money and heartpain of all the other matters.
and i had still blogged earlier this afternn. 塞翁失马,焉知非福,i said. and it happened again. i lost my second precious pair of oakley sunglasses when i was changing at the gym. left it in the toilet. how i loved my sunglasses. more than my ipod photo, for that matter. to think i could lose it for a second time.
makes me ponder. heavily. i guess living w/o a destiny is not as easy as it sounds cool. without a destiny means without all the fortunes that destiny lays in store for you. it means no such thing as good luck, like winning in a raffle draw, or a lottery. it means no luckily, like when u tot all it gone and yet, hope appears from nowhere. it means no As, no never-minds. a 40-qns CAT MCQ could kill you, easily, even when so many others get As.
i had meant to moan abt how life has been terrible to me. because, to add salt to the wound, a last trick of heaven had to be played such that a whole 16oz cup of cold soft drink had to drench my back during dinner when i was almost forgetting abt the sunglasses. but i digress.
i had meant to moan abt how life has been terrible to me. but i realise that i dont really care. my life is the way i live it. whether you like it or not. i may tumble more than others. but if tumbling is not defined as a negative event in my dictionary, it doesnt really matter, does it?
life is not all bleak. i take these tumbles in my stride now. is it wrong to be used to all these? perhaps. shld i try to change? maybe. do i care? not really. because if i had cared, i would not have been alive typing this now.
enjoy life for its little, simple pleasures. so little that most pple walked on by without seeing it. the bright blue sky, the blindingly beautiful sun. (sth i can now see even more clearly without the cover of shades) the warmth of the human crowd. the chirping of the birds when walking to my 8am class. the distinct smell of building sickness, or of obnoxious car fumes. ok, i can live without the last one.
and above all, the wonderful pple around me. who can (hopefully) accept this blundered blundering blundersome blunder.
littlekid. the kid w/o a destiny. defiant as he is. to take whatever the world can throw at him.

random tots...
i just posted my income tax returns to the IRS. amused that i used a "i love you" commemorative stamp for that.
updated my flight details for flying back to sg. arriving on wednesday night sgt. no arrival party pls. :p
darling has been very stressed over her sch work. darling must 加油哦!
been feeling tired. even though i slept a lot (compared to spring break and last quarter). shld try sleeping even more till i no longer sleep in class. (if that's possible)
塞翁失马,焉知非福. wonder how many pple heard this chinese children's story before. i went happily to revelle plaza for a superbly good dinner (roast chicken, favourite corn bread, and strawberries!), and happily chatted with darling online over the dinner. unfortunately, lost my ID card then. only found out this morning when i had to pay for brunch. went to revelle to ask for it, (no luck), but luckily met sy who passed me envelope for my tax and a nice dvd "blue". (sy lost her card 5 times? 4 times it came back. powerful.) made my replacement card. wonder if ill find my old card back. wonder if anything good can come out of all this.
reminds me of time when darling and i were flying from SD to Raleigh. missed 2 flights, 1 luggage went as advance party, but in return for the extra trouble, we got to watch fireworks at scripps cliffs and roamed downtown sd for a day. worth the trouble? definitely.
lab is boring. DH5a (heat competent bacteria), KAT2 (kinesin protein), pSK (MCS vector)... the usual... not learning anything... hope things pick up soon...
updated my flight details for flying back to sg. arriving on wednesday night sgt. no arrival party pls. :p
darling has been very stressed over her sch work. darling must 加油哦!
been feeling tired. even though i slept a lot (compared to spring break and last quarter). shld try sleeping even more till i no longer sleep in class.

Custom Academic Regalia for Sixth College
UCSD
CAMPUS NOTICE
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO
April 1, 2005
FROM: OFFICE OF THE PROVOST - SIXTH COLLEGE
TO: ALL AT UCSD
SUBJECT: CUSTOM ACADEMIC REGALIA FOR SIXTH COLLEGE
The tradition of academic regalia was developed in the
Middle Ages at Oxford University from the garments
worn by monks and clerics when long robes were worn
for warmth in unheated buildings. Trimmings of the
European regalia came to the United States during
colonial times. The American regalia was codified at
the end of the 19th century, and the first known
wearing of regalia at a United States graduation was
at the University of Michigan in 1895.
Although the robe is regulated and has not changed
substantially, the headgear continues to evolve. Cowls,
originally worn by the monks, have evolved to the hoods
worn today by academics with doctoral degrees. Rounded
skullcaps replaced the hoods and are still worn in some
European Universities. The skull caps evolved to
berets, and in the 16th century the flattened crowns of
the berets evolved to the square head gear called
pileus quadralus, which are topped with a flat board
and which later were derisively called Oxford mortar
boards for their resemblance to the pallets used by
masons.
The first commencement of the Sixth College of the
University of California will honor the long tradition
of the Academy by requiring the traditional gowns of
academia.
We will also start a tradition by requiring a headgear
that acknowledges the contemporary American culture in
which the college was founded. The new headgear, which
will be available at the UCSD bookstore for about $20.48
(exact price to be determined), will be constructed
around a dark blue skullcap of felt like material. A
short round-edged board mounted at the base of the cap
will shade a quarter of the circumference of the cap.
A button or pin at the apex will affix a tassel. See
below for a sample picture.
The Caps will be assembled by the California company
"Custom Regalia for Academic Processionals" (also known
by its acronym). These caps are suitable for wearing
throughout the year. We strongly encourage all members
of the Sixth College Community to purchase and proudly
wear the Sixth College "C.R.A.P. Caps".
A sample picture of the Sixth College Regalia is
included below (also as an attachment).

p/s: i love sixth college. =)
pp/s: even if it means having multiple dirtied tampons smeared across my bathroom sinks by the cheeky girls upstairs... eeewww.....

spring is here...
butterflies fluttering like snow flakes everywhere you go...
light warm winds blowing away unseen dead leaves, revealing the green beneath it all...
sunny days cheering oakley's up, chasing away the winter chill...
freshness. warmth. light-heartedness. light-headedness.
yes, u cant deny it. spring is here. season of change. season of improvement. season of fun, play and joy.
everything has been going well since spring break. im sure things will stay this way.
spring. season for hope. enjoy... =)
